Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
