Crew Member Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
