Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Policy Shifts

The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Problem

The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in the city have continued as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.

Multiple Pollution Sources

The situation in the city is resulting from a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating toxic smog that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air descends.

Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the capital region is significant, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can result in malignancies.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 early mortalities per year in the capital.
