Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials voiced anger after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.
The Message That Sparked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in military or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all made an pledge to defend and support this national charter," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you must decline illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that violate the statutes or our national charter."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a angry response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Answer
Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined announcement denouncing the comments.
"Political violence has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our United States with great loyalty and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical social media posts and recant his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.
Representatives' Defiant Reaction
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We are veterans and security experts who love this nation and swore an oath to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No warning, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that important duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the former president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Political Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of the government instructing military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a White House press conference on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative replied: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the official stated. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to organize a recorded statement to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the commander in chief's legal commands."
She added: "The sanctity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in casualties, it can cause disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
