Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation Chief James Comey Submits Denial Plea to Accusations of Misleading US Legislators
Former FBI chief James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.
The former director's legal representative submitted the answer acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would try to have the proceedings terminated for multiple reasons including that his the accused, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.
James Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump urged his attorney general to proceed against him.
Judicial Process
In court on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative told the judge they planned to file multiple legal requests to throw out the legal matter before a trial, arguing the government's case was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to take over the case.
Mr Comey's case was first overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from the former president after his probe into an additional rival - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.
Judicial Environment
James Comey seemed in positive mood as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the former government terminated.
After listening to the judge state his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he understood the charges.
"I do your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.
Previous Events
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about a few months into the former president's first administration as president. At the period, the director was directing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the election effort.
During his tenure, the director sparked a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just days before the national vote that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, leading to disapproval from the Republican party as well.
Ongoing Accusations
Government attorneys claim Mr Comey lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he misled the Senate by saying he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets information about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.
Personal Comments
Via social media the former director published to his Instagram after he was accused, he stated he was innocent and charged Trump of acting like a "dictator".
"My family and I have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to challenging the former president," he commented. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a court case."
These allegations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump shared on online platforms calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute the former director and others.
