Putin Assures Steady Energy Shipments to India in Defiance of American Demands

Amid a clear signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to provide “unbroken” deliveries of oil to India. This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and asserted their partnership were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Statement Aimed at the West

This affirmation, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have tried to compel New Delhi into scaling back its close links with Moscow. This comes comes after earlier American measures, notably the imposition of import duties on India due to its purchase of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a dependable source of energy resources and anything necessary for the development of India’s industry,” Putin remarked. “Moscow stands willing to keep guaranteeing the uninterrupted delivery of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, while not referencing crude explicitly, reinforced the focus by saying that “a stable energy base has been a robust and important foundation of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Challenging US Interference

In the lead-up to the summit, via a television interview, Putin had questioned Washington's stance over India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, then why can't India have the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival marked his initial journey to India after the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a visible effort to display that the personal rapport between the men remained intact.

A Warm Greeting

In a unusual gesture, the Indian PM personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. They embraced warmly akin to longtime companions before enjoying a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

Modi referred to India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “based on shared respect and strong faith.”

Expanding Defence and Economic Partnerships

The bilateral summit yielded multiple key agreements across defence and economic cooperation. A major outcome was the signing of an strategic roadmap aimed at 2030, which targets to boost mutual trade to a hundred billion USD annually by the 2030 deadline.

The leaders also vowed to recalibrate their military partnership. While Russia continues to be India's primary source of weapons, its share has diminished lately as India aims to diversify its supply base.

The official release highlighted cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of sophisticated defence platforms, even if direct mention of purchases such as the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.

Overall, Moscow and Delhi affirmed that amid the “ongoing challenging, tense, and unpredictable international environment, Russian-Indian ties continue to be durable to outside forces.”
