The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
