Several days post Hurricane Melissa pummelled into the island's west coast with unprecedented strength, locals in affected areas by the shoreline are continuing to hope for assistance.

Many of the roads are clogged with rubble and residents remain cut off with scarce supplies, lacking utilities, and no idea of when normalcy will return.

Growing Fatalities

Officials reported on Saturday that a minimum of 28 persons in Jamaica have died since the hurricane hit as a powerful maximum-level cyclone with winds reaching 185 mph.

This represents almost a 50% increase in the death toll overnight, and totals might grow as officials clear their way into additional regions in the coming days.

Area-Specific Damage

Westmoreland parish is thought to contain the next largest count of unconfirmed deaths, behind the southeastern parish to the south east. The hurricane's center struck approximately between the two neighbouring parishes. Within that parish an the vast majority of residences have been wrecked.

Roughly four hundred thousand residents in Jamaica were lacking electricity recently , and an untold number more have no access to cell phone service or Wi-Fi, separated from global communications.

Government Response

Farming Consequences

Similar attitude appears struck by an agricultural worker, sitting in the bed of his truck selling pears, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes – the remaining harvest that was saved from destruction.

Of his farm, he said: "Total devastation occurred. Total ruin resulted" But he promptly continued: "We need to appreciate being alive"

Foreign Aid

Meanwhile, external support is commencing delivery into Jamaica.

United States officials stated that its emergency relief unit had made entry. And countries including the UK have also committed substantial financial assistance and necessary provisions.
